Due to technological advances, whether on metal or concrete, there are polyurea coating products that can be used without a primer to obtain higher adhesion during laboratory testing. However, in most cases, given the complexity of the project, matching primers are still required.
Why do Polyurea Coatings need matching primer
1.Clean after cement sanding or metal sandblasting, the surface inevitably exists dust. The process of painting a primer is to turn this dust into the internal filler of the primer. The dust remaining on the bonded surface makes the last cleaning before construction. Who can guarantee that the substrate is spotless before on-site construction of polyurea?
2.Seal moisture concrete, wood and other porous materials, the internal presence of moisture is inevitable. One of the roles of the coating primer is to seal off moisture from the substrate so as not to affect the curing of the polyurea when it is applied.
3.Balance of adhesion Although on carbon steel, without primer, polyurea can also get very good (even better than with primer) adhesion, but due to the absence of primer, sandblasted carbon steel, there is a problem of rust return. So it is better to paint primer, of course, if you can control not to return to rust, you can also not do primer.
4.Concrete, wood and other substrates to enhance the role of the primer will more or less penetrate into the concrete or wood inside, the substrate to play a role in enhancing, which can significantly improve the adhesion.
